House Republican Whip U.S. Representative Eric Cantor (R-VA) issued the following statement in response to a Chicago Tribune report that notes, “A final report on the failed family bank of Democratic Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias will not be released until after the Nov. 2 election.”

“People are extremely frustrated with Washington and the use of political influence to hide important information from the public is a clear example why.

“Illinois voters should know all of the facts about the candidates before casting their ballots, and the government should not be covering up information to protect political candidates.

“The failure of Alexi Giannoulias’ bank cost the government millions of dollars, and there is no excuse for President Obama and his administration to hide information from Illinois voters. Further, Alexi Giannoulias himself should demand that all information be made public if he has nothing to hide.”

National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) Chairman U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) issued the following statement in response to a Chicago Tribune report that notes, “A final report on the failed family bank of Democratic Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias will not be released until after the Nov. 2 election.”

“President Obama won a historic election by promising to ‘change the way Washington works,’ but just two years later, his administration appears to be directing agencies to delay a report in an attempt to influence a U.S. Senate race.

“This demands answers immediately: Why is the Obama Administration holding back information involving the failure of Alexi Giannoulias' bank, which cost the taxpayers millions? President Obama should step forward and demonstrate leadership immediately to ensure that this information is in the public domain before Illinois voters cast their ballots.”

In Illinois, failed mob banker Alexi Giannoulias is under fire for his desperate, misleading attacks accusing Mark Kirk of “treason.”  Local TV news stations NBC 5 and CBS 2 slammed Giannoulias for his ridiculous and misleading attacks against Mark Kirk. And the Chicago Tribune editorializes:

Be unkind and blame desperation, or be kind and blame fatigue. Either way, Democrat Alexi Giannoulias' juvenile pander to Big Labor — his charge that Republican Mark Kirk is guilty of "economic treason" — suggests that he's too reckless and immature to fill a seat occupied by Everett McKinley Dirksen, Adlai Stevenson III and Barack Obama. Giannoulias invoked treason, the only crime defined in the Constitution, ostensibly because, a day before a congressional vote on overseas business, Kirk conducted an Internet videoconference fundraiser from the U.S. with a dozen U.S. businesspeople working in Beijing. Note that these are American citizens, not foreign nationals. This is legal — as presidential candidate Obama's campaign surely knew before it scheduled two 2008 fundraisers with Americans in China.

While the Sun-Times’ Lynn Sweet notes that Giannoulias’ attack is not only ridiculous, it’s completely hypocritical:

Giannoulias went to Canada to collect money from U.S. trial lawyers at a convention; President Obama's 2008 campaign had a series of fund-raising events overseas.

Meanwhile, Giannoulias is attacking Kirk – a decorated veteran – for his service to our nation after Giannoulias never served a day in his life. The Huffington Post reports:

The DSCC's counterpart, the National Republican Senatorial Committee, hit back immediately after the ad launched. "Only one candidate in this race honorably served our nation's military, while the other loaned millions of dollars to known criminals and lost millions of dollars in Illinois' college savings program," said NRSC press secretary Amber Marchand in a release. "This ad is shameful, and it's offensive to all of the men and women who have bravely served our nation's armed forces." The ad had been foreshadowed in a blog post on The Weekly Standard earlier this week, in which blogger Daniel Halper caught Democratic operative Carl Nyberg soliciting veterans for the spot on Facebook. "Will veterans stand for this?" Halper wrote. "A man who never served recruiting veterans to smear a fellow veteran for political gain? Will the mainstream media catch on and finally call out Giannoulias for going over the line? We'll see."

In light of the DSCC’s new desperate attack ad in Illinois smearing Mark Kirk’s service to our nation, NRSC Press Secretary Amber Marchand said:

"The facts are clear: Only one candidate in this race honorably served our nation’s military, while the other loaned millions of dollars to known criminals and lost millions of dollars in Illinois’ college savings program. The Democrats are trying to smear the record of a decorated service member in an effort to prop up a failed mob banker who has never worn a military uniform for one single day in his life. This ad is shameful, and it’s offensive to all of the men and women who have bravely served our nation’s armed forces."
